Despite the Enormous Potential, We are Still Waiting for a Breakthrough. The Polish Economic Institute&#8217;s Latest Report Indicates that Biogas Production in our Country could Reach up to 8 Billion Cubic Meters Annually. Will Biogas Finally Flourish and Expand in the National Economy?<\/h5>\n\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n<p>However, it appears that Poland wants to make up for lost time and catch up with other countries, as it has enormous potential for producing this type of gas. The possibilities are enormous, yet we still lag behind Europe. According to the Polish Economic Institute&#8217;s report, our country is at an early stage of biogas and biomethane installation development compared to other European Union countries. <\/p>\n\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><em> &#8211; According to the Energy Regulatory Office data (as of March 2025), there are 416 facilities in our country (415 biogas plants, 1 biomethane plant). The Energy Market Agency indicates that they have an installed capacity of 320 MW and annual electricity production of just under 1.6 TWh (0.94% of domestic electricity production in 2024) <\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8211; reads the Polish Economic Institute&#8217;s report. <\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n<p>It&#8217;s worth adding that of the total number of such installations, only about 180 are agricultural biogas plants that use raw materials supplied from fields and the agri-food industry. How do we compare to Europe? Unfortunately, the numbers leave no doubt that it&#8217;s high time to get to work. In the Old Continent, there are over 20,000 biogas plants and about 1,600 biomethane plants. According to PIE, the EU&#8217;s technical biomethane generation capacity at the end of the first quarter of 2024 exceeded 6.4 billion m<sup>3<\/sup>, which is over 9,800 times Poland&#8217;s production in 2025. <\/p>\n\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n<p>The first biomethane plant in our country was launched only in February 2025 at the Agricultural Experimental Farm in Brody. It was created under the supervision of scientists from the Pozna\u0144 University of Life Sciences and was funded by the National Center for Research and Development. The installation is set to produce 0.65 million m<sup>3<\/sup> of biomethane annually, which will be compressed and sold as fuel in the transport sector (bioCNG). <\/p>\n\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><em>&#8220;History is being made here,&#8221; said Paulina Hennig-Kloska, Minister of Climate and Environment, during a press conference at the Agricultural Experimental Farm in Brody. &#8220;These types of research projects, co-conducted by scientific units and the National Center for Research and Development, show that it&#8217;s worth looking for modern solutions to replace natural gas and other fuels used so far,&#8221; she emphasized. <\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n<p>According to the Polish Economic Institute, our country has great potential for biogas and biomethane production but uses it minimally. The National Energy and Climate Plan (KPEiK) assumes that Poland&#8217;s biomethane production potential is up to 8 billion m\u00b3 &#8211; if realized, it would cover 46% of Poland&#8217;s natural gas demand (8 out of 17.4 billion m\u00b3). It was also emphasized that this would significantly reduce our country&#8217;s dependence on fuel imports from abroad or enable a faster transition away from coal in power generation and heating. <\/p>\n\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n<p> &#8211; Other estimates, e.g., by the Gas for Climate organization, suggest that Poland&#8217;s potential for producing this fuel is even greater &#8211; ranking 5th in Europe in terms of volume (about 13 billion m\u00b3 in the long-term perspective of 2050) &#8211; reads the PIE report.
