Biogas and biomethane. How does it work and what can we gain?
Biogas is an opportunity for the development of our "small homelands" and an energy breakthrough. We explain how biogas and biomethane differ and why it's worth talking about them now?
Imagine self-sufficient farms, fields fertilized with odorless fertilizer instead of today’s slurry spreading, and a product made from biogas that comes from local sources supplied by farmers, exported throughout the country and beyond. Thanks to the biomethane production plant, farmers supplying raw materials earn money, new jobs are created, and local governments have additional funds for investments for residents. Sounds like a futuristic vision? Not necessarily. Today this is already happening in many municipalities, and farmers and residents who took advantage of the opportunity admit straight out – we unnecessarily delayed the decision for too long.
A huge opportunity for Poland. Will we take advantage of it?
More and more local governments and farms are investing in biogas plants - facilities that bring profits to farmers, tax revenues to local governments, and benefits to residents. The potential is enormous and must be utilized, as it also means a more energy-secure Poland.
Up to 2,000 agricultural biogas plants could be built in Poland. Not taking advantage of such an opportunity would be a proverbial sin of neglect. Especially today – in times of rising energy and fuel prices and the fight for energy security.
Biogas is an opportunity to replace the natural gas we buy from wealthy countries with the same gas – biomethane, produced locally from our own resources that we possess, so that the resulting profits remain partially in our pockets.

Unfounded prejudices and disinformation cause investors to often hit a proverbial wall, facing residents’ protests that are sometimes politically exploited or fueled by lobbies that find local Polish gas production inconvenient. Therefore, it’s worth looking at the matter objectively, citing specific and factual arguments. So is a biogas plant a threat or a huge opportunity for development in municipalities? Nearly 200 agricultural biogas plants are already operating in Poland, and despite initial concerns, residents took the risk and today benefit from plants in their area.

In other countries, biogas plants are sprouting up like mushrooms after rain, there are thousands of them, and farmers, local government officials, and most importantly, residents themselves are satisfied with the installations. So why are there so many prejudices in our country?

Biogas - it pays off for everyone. Why it's worth saying "yes"?
New jobs, profit for farmers from selling raw materials, cheaper heat and fertilizers, as well as tax revenues that can be spent on roads, schools, or infrastructure? Yes, it's possible! Real benefits for residents and better living are no longer just a privilege of the wealthiest municipalities with developed industry, fossil fuel deposits, or metal ores - today, agricultural areas where there are suitable conditions for building a biomethane production plant also benefit.
Local energy, national matter
Poland has limited gas deposits and is forced to buy it from countries that have such resources in excess and often live off their sale, making an excellent business out of it. This can be reversed! Now a single municipality can be a producer of this precious resource.
Building a biomethane production plant is not only another step toward energy security but also brings huge benefits for the local community. A significant part of the income from biomethane production will remain where it was created – in the form of work wages, taxes, payment for substrates supplied by farmers, or local services.
Every meter of new road, sidewalk, every subsidy, reduced heating bill – these are concrete gains that return to residents. This isn’t theory – such investments are already working and bringing effects in dozens of Polish municipalities.
New wealth just beyond the fence
The wealthiest municipalities in Poland are those with developed industry or resources (including coal, metal ores). Biomethane also gives a chance to agricultural regions that don’t have natural deposits but provide raw materials from local suppliers (e.g., manure, slurry, straw), which are processed into valuable methane.
A historic chance to make Poland independent once and for all
Poland has one of Europe’s highest potentials for biomethane production raw materials, which, combined with our underground gas deposits, give us a historic chance to finally become independent from external suppliers.
Profit for the municipality, strength for the entire country
Biogas means real financial benefits. That’s several million zlotys annually for substrate suppliers and contracted local service providers, about 1 million PLN in direct taxes, as well as new jobs, cheaper fertilizers, and heat. Biomethane means profits that will stay in residents’ wallets.
